The obstacles they faced

CDN operates as a cloud-based service, with operations hosted and managed by Rackspace Technology. "We've never had any problems in terms of scalability as we went from moving 10 vehicles to 3 million vehicles," said Mike Thorby, Founder and CEO of Car Delivery Network.

With the automobile industry struggling due to COVID-19, the CDN team decided it wanted to volunteer time and do something good for the world by launching an app to connect volunteers with the community.

CDN recognized that its platform — software that usually connects car manufacturers with car dealers and allows tasks to be tracked — was agile and sophisticated enough to be repurposed quickly to help coordinate volunteering efforts.

"Our business is software-as-a-service, so we're paid when a vehicle is delivered, and that pretty much stopped overnight,” Thorby said. “We ended up sitting there at home locked down thinking, ‘What do we do next?’"

"People were stuck at home and they needed help,” said Derric Hicks, General Manager, North America at Car Delivery Network. “They needed people to be able to go pick up supplies, pick up groceries, pick up meds."

How We Helped

Rackspace Technology® set aside $10 million in free OpenStack® public cloud hosting resources over six months during 2020 for organizations participating in COVID-19 relief efforts.

Rackspace supported CDN by providing an OpenStack environment and the expertise of Rackers to ensure that the CDN community app, Reach, was tested and available in just four days.

The Reach app is a free global application that helps community groups, Facebook groups, churches and other associations mobilize their volunteers and get help to those who need it.

"We ripped all that code out of our car haul software, made some adjustments to it, and came up with the Reach platform,” said Hicks. There are always people that are in need of help. This gives you a tool to be able to go out and to drop off a little card or a package to your neighbor, giving them a way to feel connected."

Reach is hosted on OpenStack Public Cloud, which provided CDN with the redundancy and security required for an enterprise-grade application. This enabled the scalability required to support volunteers around the world.

"To be able to launch, it was really important to know that when we went out there that it was going to actually be able to handle any volume that came at us,” said Thorby. “We're able to spin up as many servers as we want. That allows us then to hold and keep our data secure, and that's on the OpenStack servers. What happens if a thousand groups join? My answer to that is: bring it on. We know it can handle it."

CDN repurposed its platform, which typically manages 3 million+ vehicle deliveries, to coordinate global volunteer efforts during the pandemic.

What we achieved together

The collaboration between CDN and Rackspace Technology resulted in the successful launch of the Reach app. During 2020, Reach supported tens of thousands of self-isolating people in the U.S., UK, and New Zealand, with the ability to scale worldwide. This addressed the initial challenge of helping people who were stuck at home and needed assistance with essential tasks.

The scalability and security provided by Rackspace OpenStack Public Cloud allowed CDN to confidently launch and expand its volunteer coordination efforts without worrying about technical limitations. This solved the crucial challenge of being able to handle any volume of users that came their way.

"We're very grateful that Rackspace has latched onto this, and that we've been able to partner in this process," said Hicks.

"Going forward, out of this pandemic, I think there's going to be a big change in the way that we care for our communities, the way we think about our aged population, the way we think about vulnerable people and how we look after them," Thorby added.
