Domino's Pizza UK & Ireland Ltd., the region's leading pizza delivery company, has redefined convenience and technology in the food delivery industry. As the master franchisee for the region, the company has transformed from a traditional takeaway business into a technology-driven enterprise, with 90% of its system sales now flowing through digital channels and nearly six million active customers using the Domino's mobile application.
Operating from its support office in Milton Keynes, Domino's combines centralized corporate operations with a network of franchisee-owned stores connected through technology platforms. These platforms support everything from ecommerce and mobile ordering to supply chain management and store operations, ensuring fresh ingredients are delivered to every location multiple times per week.
During peak periods, Domino’s systems must handle significant spikes in order volume while maintaining consistent service delivery across its entire network of approximately 1,300 connected stores. As the company prepares to expand to over 1,600 locations, its infrastructure must continue evolving to support future growth and scalability.
"We know with Rackspace Technology that the quality is high and we're getting competent engineers that can support our own teams. We only have a small team of 25 engineers, so it's important we have the right partners in place that help us grow."
Situation
By 2015, Domino's rapid growth and a surge in digital ordering created significant pressure on its technology infrastructure. The company faced the dual challenge of maintaining the stability of its existing operations during peak periods while also ensuring its systems could dynamically scale to support faster innovation.
"As the team evaluated its infrastructure needs, we identified a critical requirement for scalable, reliable platforms to support growth," said Michael Chute, Head of Platform Engineering and Architecture for Domino's UK & Ireland Ltd. "We needed robust platforms that we could grow our business with. Domino's is quite an agile business — what we plan at the beginning of the year often evolves as we adapt to market trends and customer needs. That’s how we have to operate to remain competitive.”
"We're probably more of a technology company than a pizza company," added Mike Fanning, Head of Cloud Engineering at Domino’s UK & Ireland. "We effectively fuel our franchisees with the ingredients and the platforms needed to fulfill our customer orders."

"Rackspace has always been our trusted partner of choice for infrastructure. They know our needs, they know our wants, they know the things that help power our business."

Solution
Domino's found its answer in a hybrid cloud solution and partnered with Rackspace Technology™ (a relationship that began in 2011) to support its journey toward a more flexible and scalable infrastructure. The company chose Microsoft® Azure® and leveraged Rackspace expertise to ensure a smooth transition while maintaining the stability of its critical systems.
"Rackspace was our safe pair of hands," Chute said. "We needed that same reliability in the public cloud. We identified the foundational elements for success, built out a strategy, iterated on it and invited Rackspace to guide us forward."
The transformation began with modernizing Domino's ecommerce platform, moving from the original architecture to microservices running on Azure® Kubernetes Service. This enabled more efficient scaling during peak periods while maintaining critical systems in a dedicated environment. The new architecture also accelerated development cycles, allowing for faster feature deployment to support customer demands.
To ensure consistency across environments, the company adopted Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) practices, enabling rapid environment rebuilding and standardized platform configurations.
"Everything's done as code to make that process repeatable and maintain the same standards across all of our platforms," said Chute. "Automation is key for Domino's. It keeps our platforms scalable and ensures that code development is quick and efficient."
Simultaneously, Domino's began implementing Microsoft® Dynamics 365 to modernize its supply chain and finance operations. The Rackspace team worked closely with third-party vendors to ensure seamless integration of the new solutions.
"This platform is going to revolutionize our supply chain and finance operations," Fanning said. "We're building bridges between the cloud and our line-of-business systems to enable them to speak the same language."
Throughout the transformation, the Rackspace Professional Services team has worked as an extension of Domino's organization, collaborating across multiple teams and vendors while providing crucial technical expertise. The partnership proved especially valuable during major events, such as the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
"We wanted eyes over all of our key platforms to ensure they were up and functioning," Fanning said. "With short notice, the Rackspace team quickly put a plan in place to help us through what proved to be a very successful event."
Throughout the transformation, the Rackspace team provided critical support to Domino's operations, working closely with internal teams to deliver the technical expertise needed for success. "We have Rackers that are embedded into our teams, and we know with Rackspace that the quality is high and we're getting engineers that can support our own teams," Chute said. " We only have a small team of about 25 engineers covering everything from our ecommerce platform to our support office IT function to our supply chain."

Domino's Pizza UK & Ireland seamlessly handles peak demands across 1,300 current stores and nearly six million app users, while targeting expansion to more than 1,600 locations.
Outcome
Domino's worked with Rackspace Technology to build a hybrid technology environment that combines private cloud stability with the scalability of Microsoft® Azure®. This infrastructure supports all stores and seamlessly handles significant traffic spikes during peak periods without compromising performance.
"What public cloud allows us to do is react to those demands," Chute said. "We can deal with the ambiguity, we can scale up platforms very quickly in order to meet that growth."
The hybrid environment has proven particularly valuable for Domino's rapid-growth business model. Its modernized ecommerce platform's microservices architecture enables faster feature deployment and more efficient scaling, while IaC practices ensure consistent, reliable deployments across environments.
"Our customers are generally moving towards an app-first approach to ordering and engagement, and it's a route that we want to drive," said Fanning. "It helps us engage better with our customers, get to know their preferences and deliver the products they want faster."
Domino’s continues to advance its cloud journey by strengthening disaster recovery capabilities and expanding its cloud footprint. "Having a hybrid environment gives us the flexibility of both dedicated infrastructure and the scalability of public cloud," Chute said. "It's important that we have those options available to support our business needs."
The company plans for a cloud first strategy and Rackspace will support them throughout next steps including continued analysis on the private cloud environment to identify opportunities and workloads that make sense to transition to Azure.
